Viewing images on remote machine with X11 forwarding

gpicview: http://lxde.sourceforge.net/gpicview/

Easy to install:
./configure
make
make install

Then alias "imshow" to point to the gpicview binary.

After this:
$ imshow <imgfilename>
will display the image.
